Software Engineering Intern Finance

WindBorne Systems is supercharging weather forecasts with a unique proprietary data source: a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons targeting the most critical atmospheric data. We design, manufacture, and operate our own balloons, using the data they collect to generate otherwise unattainable weather intelligence.

Our mission is to eliminate weather uncertainty, and in the process help humanity adapt to climate change, be that predicting hurricanes or speeding the adoption of renewables. We are building a future in which the planet is instrumented by thousands of our microballoons, eliminating gaps in our understanding of the planet and giving people and businesses the information they need to make critical decisions. The founding team of Stanford engineers was named Forbes 2019 30 under 30 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.

WindBorne is hiring Software Engineering Interns who are excited about combining software with a strong interest in finance. This role sits at the intersection of engineering and financial operations: you’ll be building the tools that keep our finance workflows running smoothly, from procurement and reporting.

It’s a great fit if you love fullstack development but also want to understand (and shape) how money moves through a business. You don’t need to be an expert in accounting, but curiosity about finance concepts like AP/AR, cash vs. accrual accounting, and revenue recognition will help you thrive.

Responsibilities

Highly variable depending on background skills and interests. You will be given the responsibility, respect, and trust that full time engineers get, and if you are good, there will be high potential to convert to full time.

  • Build and maintain internal tools using React, Python, and PostgreSQL.

  • Connect financial systems and data sources, some with APIs and some without.

  • Automate workflows (e.g., ingesting CSVs, normalizing data, updating databases).

  • Design user-friendly UIs for finance and operations teams.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers and finance stakeholders to ship tools quickly.

Support workflows like procure-to-pay (quotes, POs, receipts, invoices) and payroll forecasting.

Skills and Qualifications

Besides general software skills, the only things required are high agency, willingness to work extremely hard, and ability to learn very quickly. In the era of LLM’s, an individual with those attributes can accomplish almost anything. However, we are specifically interested in the following skills.

  • Experience with fullstack development (React, Python, PostgreSQL).

  • Interest in learning and applying finance concepts to technical problems.

  • Comfort with vibe coding: ability to experiment, prompt, and execute.
  • Excitement about infrastructure and systems, especially the unglamorous plumbing  that makes everything work.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with fintech APIs such as Plaid, Brex, or QuickBooks Online.

  • Experience with backend/infrastructure challenges (e.g., managing data pipelines, syncing systems without APIs).

  • Previous exposure to accounting or financial systems.

Benefits

Office food and beverages (minimum 2x catered lunches & dinners a week)

Potential to convert to full-time, with all associated benefits
