We are hiring a part-time balloon launch contractor based in Oahu, HI to support our weather forecasting mission. You'll be launching high-altitude weather balloons that collect atmospheric data used to improve forecasts for events like hurricanes and wildfires. The role is hands-on and outdoors, with flexible hours — approximately 10–20 hours per week, depending on the company's launch needs — across evenings, weekdays, and weekends.
Own government implementations across WindBorne’s software platforms, combining full-stack engineering, security compliance, and direct collaboration with government customers.
Build reliable infrastructure for WindBorne’s AI weather models, including production inference, data pipelines, distributed training, monitoring, and recovery.
Own operational projects across WindBorne’s balloon constellation, from field deployments and customer demonstrations to new hardware rollouts and unusual flight operations.
Lead WindBorne’s manufacturing line and technician team, manage daily production, troubleshoot challenges, and improve quality, workflow, and output.
This is an atypical position: most hardware isn’t at design lock, but we produce it at volume (currently 1,000 units a month, doubling every six months). We need someone to make decisions on which parts of a design are stable enough to tool up and document, and which need to stay flexible, as well as the engineering rigor to build repeatable, sustainable production around a moving target. If that seems exciting, this job might be for you.
Own the software that turns raw weather-balloon measurements into trusted observations. Build sensor-processing pipelines, improve quality control, and investigate data issues.
Build reliable weather-model inference, atmospheric data pipelines, and tools that show how both are running. Prior machine learning experience is not required.
Scale WindBorne’s balloon manufacturing with expertise in thin films, web handling, and film converting. Design production systems and work closely with the CTO and R&D team.
