Back to CareersWindBorne Systems is supercharging weather forecasts with a unique proprietary data source: a global constellation of next-generation smart weather balloons targeting the most critical atmospheric data. We design, manufacture, and operate our own balloons, using the data they collect to generate otherwise unattainable weather intelligence.
Our mission is to eliminate weather uncertainty, and in the process help humanity adapt to climate change, be that predicting hurricanes or speeding the adoption of renewables. We are building a future in which the planet is instrumented by thousands of our microballoons, eliminating gaps in our understanding of the planet and giving people and businesses the information they need to make critical decisions. The founding team of Stanford engineers was named Forbes 2019 30 under 30 and is backed by top-tier investors, including Khosla Ventures and Footwork VC.

WindBorne has the best data and the best forecasts in the world, and we’re building a product to bring these forecasts to real users — and inspire delight along the way. We need a visionary Principal Product Designer to join us and redefine paradigms of interaction in an industry that hasn’t seen major innovation in decades. The key things you need to do are:
- Come up with the perfect abstractions. You know how to construct the right ways to navigate an application and communicate complex information
- Create something that isn’t just functional, but also beautiful. You have a great sense of visual taste and the ability to create new designs that are nothing short of stunning.
- Have the intuition to do the above with minimal information. You value user interviews and deep understanding, but have sufficiently deep design intuition that you can create amazing products just from first principles about the problem
This job is not about pushing pixels around on interfaces for solved problems. You will conceive of novel ways of delivering and acting on data and building a framework for interacting with our data- and AI-forward offerings to generate specific, actionable insights across multiple industries. You will work closely with both business and engineering teams, reporting directly to the CPO.
- You have experience completely owning design, starting from square zero and bringing a fully-fledged product to life through to real user feedback. You’re comfortable navigating your way through every part of the design lifecycle, shepherding products from idea to UX to pixel-perfect execution and iteration with users.
- You know how to operate starting from nothing. You can fumble around in the abyss and iterate your way to something great. This likely means either 5+ years of experience within a design org or – even better – having owned design at a startup that failed for unrelated reasons.
- You’re ready to get your hands dirty and execute every part of the design process. No task is beneath you — you’re willing to get laser-focused on the goals for the user and work as a team player to bring a product to life that’ll blow those goals out of the water.
- You know how to realize your blue-sky vision with a concrete roadmap, ruthlessly prioritizing and executing the highest leverage features to drive user value at each stage of development.
- Your preferred way of testing new ideas is sprinting to prototypes and playing with them in the real world, building things that you can’t wait to put in front of real people. You don’t just hand off your design and call it a day.
- You aren’t precious about your ideas. You work with the garage door open, and you care about the best solution, not who came up with it.
- You have a mature vision — and a high bar — for what good design looks like. You also have the capacity/experience to bridge the taste gap and create something that delights you.
